Caving (speleology) is basically the exploration of caves. Caving can mean different things to different people. For some it can be escapism from the daily grind, to others a fun way of getting some exercise. It is a mixture of leisure activity and science. There are also many aspects within caving that attract people such as the exploration of new caves, climbing, diving, photography, even sketching and painting. It comes down to the individual, but caving is certainly regarded as a very worthwhile pastime to all those who participate in the sport.
Due to their horizontal nature (typical of geological formations in Brazilian limestone) caves in Brazil can be explored with fairly basic equipment. A good pair of overalls or an old pair of trousers is a good start, and safety helmet is obligatory. Three sources of light should be used per person, one of which must be attached to the helmet, leaving the hands free. Good hiking boots are recommended for footwear. A strong belt is used from which to hang the generator and carbide, several snap hooks etc. In addition a backpack with spare batteries and carbide, matches water, food, a single-ply rope (10 meters) and a first aid kit, and you're ready to visit most of the caves in Brazil. Some caves though have specific obstacles such as rivers, deep stretches, vertical galleries and siphons, making exploration dangerous, and special techniques and instruction necessary.
Many caves in Brazil have prehistoric paintings on their walls. Although the states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais and Paraná and the Federal District of Brasília are where most groups of caves are concentrated, caves of one form or another can be found all over Brazil. Brazil Adventures is based just 25 miles away from the biggest cave groups in Brazil. Around 500 caves exist in this area, many of them discovered by our guides and operated exclusively by us. So, we can call ourselves cave experts, with all the necessary equipment and many geologist guides in our team. You will love exploring the underground with us.
